Jazz is a way of expression; the desire to feel all-encompassing rhythms and varying degrees of improvisation that is met with soul and sophistication. The roots of jazz started in the 19th and 20th centuries with blues and ragtime, and New Orleans played a key part in the development of this popular genre. My journey with jazz began as a child, influenced by the sounds of Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and many smooth jazz icons.
Founded by John Dimitriou in 1980, Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley has become the West Coast’s premier jazz club, hosting a plethora of top-name artists over the years, including Earl Klugh and Harry Connick Jr. After moving to Belltown in 1986, Jazz Alley grew into a more accessible and expansive venue, maintaining its essence of authenticity and beloved status amongst jazz enthusiasts. The atmosphere here, with its intimate setting, dim lights, and live jazz, creates a perfect backdrop for an unforgettable evening. No wonder the lines for performances extend around the block, with patrons of all ages eagerly waiting to experience the magic within.
Our experience was elevated to new heights when we attended Kenny G’s performance, a native Seattleite known for his profound saxophone skills and storytelling on stage. His long-standing friendship with his pianist, Robert, and their shared musical journey added an intimate layer to the already mesmerizing evening. Later, we were treated to Chris Botti’s show, an exquisite display of trumpet mastery adorned with guest performances by Caroline Campbell, John Splithoff, and Alicia Olatuja, making the experience even more memorable. The unique blend of talents and genres showcased at Jazz Alley is a testament to the club’s commitment to offering diverse and vibrant jazz performances.
Indeed, Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley is more than just a venue; it’s a cornerstone of Seattle’s cultural landscape, inviting both young and old to explore the depths of jazz music. Whether it’s the soulful melodies of Kenny G, the electrifying performances of Chris Botti, or the many other talented artists that grace its stage, Jazz Alley ensures every night is a celebration of jazz’s rich legacy and its enduring spirit. The club’s unwavering dedication to providing a space where legends and fans can come together is a beacon for those seeking authentic musical experiences. As we continue to support and enjoy the vibrant scene at Jazz Alley, we’re reminded of the unbreakable bond between the city of Seattle and the timeless allure of jazz music.
